The BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs from Nortel Networks deliver proven, reliable, industry-standard 100 Mbps connectivity for power workgroups in demanding network environments.
Full 100 Mbps throughput dramatically reduces network bottlenecks and improves response times tenfold over legacy 10 Mbps shared-media Ethernet networks.
Versatile and flexible, the BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs satisfy the needs of growing networks. Single hubs provide a high-performance, low-cost solution for supporting from 12 to 24 users. As network demands increase, up to eight hubs can be stacked to act as a single managed unit, providing a scalable solution that enables networks to grow incrementally for a modest investment.
The BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs are a key part of the Nortel Networks workgroup Ethernet product family. Combined with other BayStack products, including hubs, switches, routers, Internet access, and remote access equipment, the BayStack 200 Series Hubs deliver a robust, high-performance solution for small networks, client/server workgroups, and remote offices.
| Features and Benefits |
Affordable High-Speed Connectivity
The BayStack 200 Series Hubs offer excellent affordability for businesses that are building Fast Ethernet networks with future growth in mind. BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs provide full industry-standard 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet connectivity to endstations, servers, and other compatible devices. This is a tenfold improvement in network bandwidth performance over legacy 10 Mbps Ethernet.
Easy Stackability
The BayStack 200 Series Hubs are stackable
up to 8 units, for 180 managed ports, or
192 unmanaged ports, in a single hub stack, making this product a simple, scalable, and cost-effective solution for supporting growing network environments. Table 1 presents port and management configurations.
Table 1:
Port and Network Management Configurations of the BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs.
| Baystack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs | 100BASE-TX Ports | 100BASE-FX Ports | Built-in Network Management Module (NMM) |
| 202 | 12 | - | Yes |
| 203 | 12 | 1 | Yes |
| 204 | 24 | - | - |
| 205 | 12 | - | - |
Built-In Management Module
A single BayStack 202 Hub/NMM or BayStack 203 Hub/NMM is capable of managing an entire stack of BayStack 200 Series Hubs, providing complete management for up to
180 ports, and simple and affordable full-stack manageability for a growing network.
Web-based Network Management
BayStack 202 and 203 Hub/NMMs include web-based network management software, allowing network administrators to easily
access key data and information such as device
summary, configuration, fault management, statistics, applications, and support. Network managers can access data about their network and individual hubs via the local corporate intranet, or from any World Wide Web-connected PC, anywhere in the world.
Fully Integrated into
Optivity Network Management Software
The BayStack 200 Series Hubs are fully integrated into Optivity* network management software from Nortel Networks, enabling
complete Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and support for four RMON groups. Network administrators can manage their entire network, including all hubs,
switches, and routers, from a single management station using Nortel Networks Optivity. Managing with Optivity can dramatically reduce the total cost of network ownership.
Advanced Analysis and Monitoring with RMON and StackProbe
Advanced Analyzer management is available with Nortel Networks StackProbe* RMON Probe for full RMON and RMON2 capabilities. Two Pass-through ports on the StackProbe provide in-line monitoring. Application
support for StackProbes is incorporated within the Optivity network management system. Network administrators can easily gain advanced network management features
without the need for additional wiring.
Multiple Segments per Stack
The hardware-based Multisegment Cascade feature provides two Fast Ethernet single-repeater cascade segments per stack. Per-hub
configuration switching allows any hub in the stack to be assigned remotely to segment one or two. The number of workstations sharing a single collision domain can be cut in half when the stack is configured for two segments with separate uplinks to a switch, drastically improving network performance.
High-Speed Fiber Connectivity
The BayStack 203 Hub/NMM is preconfigured with a 100BASE-FX port, providing the stack with a high-speed 100 Mbps fiber uplink to the network center, without requiring a media converter or a fiber-port switch.
Fail-Safe Features
Failure safety features include automatic bypass, which automatically bypasses any hub in the stack that fails or loses power, and SmartSwap* nonvolatile configuration
memory that automatically saves and restores the configurations of all hubs in the stack through power cycles and hub replacements. This ensures that the network remains operational under demanding conditions. Automatic hub settings restoration saves time-consuming manual network administration.

Real-Time Hub Status at a Glance
The BayStack 200 Series Hubs feature an
easy-to-read front-panel LED that shows hub and segment status at a glance, with real-time
network monitoring of power, status, collision, and network usage. The displays also enable hub and network operational status to be determined immediately, right in the wiring closet, without the use of network management software.
Backed By Warranty
Each BayStack 200 Series Hub has a limited lifetime warranty, including power supply, ensuring years of worry-free operation.
Slimline 1 "U" Height
BayStack 200 Series Hubs are only one
standard unit (1.68 inches) high, which means easy stackability and higher port density in
less rack space.
BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hub Applications
The BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs offer a high-performance desktop solution for demanding network environments that quickly overwhelm legacy 10 Mbps solutions (see Figure 1). The hubs also represent an important part of the Nortel Networks Ethernet evolution strategy, unleashing the power of the BayStack 350 Switches by filling a critical need in mixed switched/ shared-media networks.
In a standalone configuration, the BayStack 200 Series Hubs deliver the bandwidth required to support power workgroups and increasingly powerful applications. Operating at 100 Mbps, the hubs can easily support the high-performance, high-utilization workstations prevalent in engineering and graphics departments-without the bottlenecks found in existing 10 Mbps Ethernet networks. BayStack 200 Series Hubs also provide sufficient bandwidth to support high-demand applications, such as client/server databases and CAD software.
Working in conjunction with other BayStack products, the BayStack 200 Series Hubs can be used to build powerful and resilient client/ server networks. In a BayStack environment, the BayStack 200 Series Hubs, connected to the BayStack 310-24T Switch, provides high-speed "big pipe" connections to high-utilization servers.
Installed with the BayStack 350 Switches, the BayStack 200 Series Hubs play a key role in the evolution to Fast Ethernet, providing a cost-effective way to improve network response times. Linking a BayStack 200 Series Hub or stack to a BayStack 350 Switch provides the power workgroup with a 100 Mbps connection to centralized resources such as high-utilization servers and routers. The BayStack 200 Series 100BASE-TX Hubs can also be linked to 100BASE-TX router interfaces on Nortel Networks routers to create Fast Ethernet networks.
