With SunFastEthernet you get 10 times the speed of standard 10-BaseT Ethernet-at less than twice the price. So in addition to giving the world's most popular networking technology a dramatic performance boost, it's also exceptionally cost-effective.
Since our adapters are compatible with existing networking protocols, media, and standards, they're also easy to deploy. You use the same wiring and the same applications you've always used, and you continue to reap the benefits of all the networking expertise you've already acquired.
The only thing that changes is your productivity Because SunFastEthernet not only increases throughput, it gives you the bandwidth needed for emerging collaborative applications such as video conferencing, audio e-mail, and much more. A low-cost alternative to ATM or FDDI, SunFastEthernet supports 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps operation over Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) wiring via an RJ45 con- nector. Other wiring types can be supported through an external third-party transceiver connected to the media-independent interface (MII) on the adapter. The on-board Category 5 transceiver automatically senses the speed of the network and runs at that speed.
These single-wide SBus cards also provide buffered DMA and 64 kilobytes of SRAM for packet buffering. The Fast Ethernet interface is an ASIC chip implemented in CMOS, which enables us to deliver an energy-efficient adapter at a very low cost.
As part of an open industry consortium known as the Fast Ethernet Alliance, Sun is working with other leading vendors to ensure that the migration path to Fast Ethernet is natural, safe, and cost-effective. So you can be sure our adapters will work with Fast Ethernet hub/switch products available from other alliance members.
