The JAYCOR FC-266 Fibre Channel adapter brings the speed and flexibility of Fibre Channel communications to workstations and other platforms using the IEEE 1496-1993 SBus. The FC-266 is a high-reliability, low-cost Fibre Channel N-Port adapter for the SBus that complies with the ANSI FC-PH Rev. 4.3 Fibre Channel standard. It can be used to connect SBus devices to Fibre Channel devices operating at a Fibre Channel bandwidth of 266 MBaud. The FC-266 can support SBus data transfer at rates up to 60 MBytes/s, allowina a system to make full use of the Fibre Channel bandwidth while still allowing other devices to have access to the SBus.

The architecture of the FC-266 is flexible and can be used to connect an SBus to several different types of Fibre Channel fabrics. Supported fabrics include Point-to-Point, Switched and Arbitrated Loop. Several connection topol- ogies are shown in the figure on the back. Support for the Arbitrated Loop fabric topology is particularly important since Arbitrated Loop can be used to interconnect fibre channel nodes without the cost of a switch. The adap- ter supports all classes of Fibre Channel service (Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 and Intermix). Additionally, the adapter provides hardware assist to increase the performance of Upper Level Protocols such as TCP/IP and SCSI.

The FC-266 comes with a complete set of diagnostics resident on the adapter board. The diagnostics perform a complete test of all internal board functions and can perform a loopback test to verify end-to-end performance of the adapter. If more than one adapter is present, the diagnostics can also be used to verify data transfer from one platform to another.

The FC-266 is easy to install and occupies a single SBus slot. It consumes 8.6 watts and does not require special cooling support. Optical connections are easy to attach and are keyed to ensure proper polarity. The adapter also provides open fiber control to simplify system setup and integration.
